12th Summer Classic Horse Show
(August 8-12, 2001)
Reported by
Carol Dean-Porter

The 12th Annual Summer Classic Horse Show will be held August 8 - 12, 2001 at the Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center in Huntington Beach, CA.

The show features the Waterfront Hilton Grand Prix, The McKenna Motors High Jump, the Summer Classic Music Derby, the Marshall & Sterling Jumper Classic, the Modified Junior/Amateur Jumper Special, the Junior Amateur/Owner Jumper Classic, the Junior Amateur/Owner Hunter Classic and two Marshall and Sterling Hunter Classics.

The prize for the horse winning the High Jump and breaking the California state high jump record of 7'3" is a 2001 BMW X-5 Sport activity vehicle plus $25,000 in cash. The winners of all previous high jumps have their names engraved on a beautiful sculpture trophy "Cavallo D'Oro" donated by Orrefors and Kosta Boda, designed by Gunnar Cyren. The sculpture weighs 30 pounds and was cut from a solid block of crystal weighing 80 pounds. The previous winners are: '90 Rob Gage and Wittekind, '91 Michael Endicott and Condor, '92 Michael Von Helmond and Condor, '93 Rob Gage and Wittekind, '94 Carol Dean-Porter and Flemming IV, '95 Edgar Pagan and Solitaire, '96 Michelle Parker and Nicholson, '97 Kyle King and Laramy 3, '98 Carol Dean-Porter and Sky Bax, '99 Sarah Baldwin and Incento, 2000 Will Simpson and McGee.

The show benefits the Huntington Beach Art Center and features free exhibitors parties, vendor booths and live television coverage.

The show runs from 8:00 am until dusk daily. Friday afternoon's entertainment during the Exhibitor's bash will be the brand new Hunt Teams of Three class, where three horses perform over a course of fences together. Saturday's special events include the Marshall & Sterling Children's/Adult jumper classic, the Modified Junior/Amateur jumper classic, the Junior-Amateur Owner Jumper Classic and the one-of-a-kind Summer Classic Music Derby. The Music Derby is a class held over the exhibitor's choice of jumps, set to music and judged on choreography, costuming and performance. This is always a crowd favorite!

Sunday features the Hilton Waterfront Hotel Grand Prix and the McKenna High Jump class.

The show is held at Huntington Central Park on Golden West Avenue, 3 miles west of the 405 freeway.
