Show Jumping World Cup Finals
Daily Report by Carol Dean-Porter

April 20, 2000

Two in a row World Cup Champion (98 & 99) Rodrigo Pessoa and Gandini Baloubet de Rouet took the lead in the first phase of the World Cup Finals.

This was a speed class, contested over 12 numbered obstacles of 15 jumping efforts. The scoring system was faults converted to seconds, with each rail down adding 4 seconds to the time and the first two refusals only adding the time actually taken.

The top three finishers were:

Rodrigo Pessoa
Todd Minikus
Mario Deslauriers

The scoring system is unique. The winner of today's class gets one more point than the total number of starters. So Rodrigo Pessoa starts tomorrow with 40 points. The rest get points in relation to where they finish, so Todd Minikus receives 38 and so on down the line.

Tomorrow's class is a jump-off class and the points from the speed phase will be added together with points from the second phase to determine the top combinations eligible for the final to be held on Sunday.

For the final, points are converted to faults and divided in half....so the leader enters the final round with a clean score, and the others with varying amounts of penalties.
