Report by James M Robbins

SHOW REPORT

Recently, I attended the 23rd annual St. Louis Charity Horse show. People all over the United States and Canada came to compete in this prestigious show. The first week of the show is Hunters and Jumpers, the second week is Saddlebred and Arabian.

Among the Hunter/Jumper competition several of my friends competed. There were several events to ride in a wide variety of areas. The St. Charles Casino Gamblers Choice, where Athletes raced against the clock and jumped for points in a jumper style event. Also there was a Pro/Am class, where Trainer and Student Dressed in costume and rode a course. In the middle a trade off of the reins took place and second half of the team rode the last part of the course all while the clock of was ticking. The spectator watching a horse show gets to see the spit and polished product of many hours of hard work . For example Katy Carnns, a working student of Irish Fox Stables in St. Charles ,Mo, arrived at the show ground at 4:30 am . She starts off her day by throwing hay and watering . She then proceeded to clean 16 stalls which Irish Fox has reserved . They rotate the horses in and out of the stalls since Irish Fox isn't more then 3 miles away from the show grounds. Jon Kornack arrives on the grounds around 6:30, at which time Katy and Jon grain and medicate the horses . After that is done, Jon and Katy go down to the warm up ring and school for about an hour. When Katy is done cooling out her horse, Playboy owned by John Korenak , she then braids him, which "can really test ones patience" say Katy. Playboy is an 11 year old Black Thoroughbred Stallion. She goes onto say that he is a very calm and gentle horse and he passes that trait along to his offspring.

Katy shows Playboy ( No Work All Play) in Amateur Adults, Missouri Horse Show Association Medal and Medallion classes. Katy one day hopes to ride on the professional circuit, with dreams of showing at the World Cup and Olympics.

The Facility where the Charity is held is the American Exposition Center. It is the second year the Charity has been held there and now has been open for an entire year now . It has two indoor arenas and a outdoor . The first indoor arena is 125' x 240' that has an attached warm up ring which measures 100' x 240' . The second indoor which was just recently completed is 125' x 220' and the attached warm up arena is 100' x 220' . The outdoor is a grandprix ring that measures 200' x 300' . The expo has over 600 stalls with more on the way as we speak. The facility has plenty of wash stalls and electrical outlets. With this new facility, St. Louis now has all the key elements to host the summer Olympics or at the very least host some truely awesome horse shows for years too come.
