YOU JUST CAN'T BEAT THIS HAT
By Tiffany Caputo
(WARD22RULZ2000)

He was 7 years old when he got it,
a gift from dad, his first cowboy hat.
It was much to big for his little head,
so he put it on a rack.
His daddy set him on his knee, said
“Boy listen to me, I got that when I joined the rodeo,
a cowboy in my prime
and now I’m giving it to you, I think it's time.”
He'd stare at it each night before he went to bed,
Played Cowboys and Indians having to hold it on his head.
He loved the way it stood out in the midst of his baseball caps,
he couldn't wait till he got older to greet everyone with a tap.
When he turned 12 his daddy took him and taught him how to ride,
he couldn't stay on anything, always falling on his hide.
But he'd get up and try again, with never any luck,
he'd be off the jolting creature in the matter of a buck.
He went home that night and placed the hat on his head,
stood in front of the mirror and this is what he said...

I’m gonna make it to the big time,
just like you did dad,
you'll see me there someday,
and I’ll be wearing this hat.
It's more then a gift, that you've given me
I’ll repay you someday, dad you wait and see.
When I hold it I can do no wrong,
when I wear it, my faith is strong
and a fact is that,
You just can't beat this hat.

He turned 16 on the first day of summer break,
he was awaken by the sound he knew his daddy's truck to make.
He jumped out of bed and pulled on his jeans,
grabbed a clean shirt from the washer machine
Went to his bed and picked up that black hat,
and placed it on his head.
He ran down the stairs and out the front door out to the shed.
There waiting for his eyes to see,
was a brand new 4x4 parked underneath a tree.
He was so excited when his daddy threw him the keys.
Two years later he joined the PBR,
a rough, tough cowboy, a bullridin' star.
A lot of hard knocks, close calls and bad draws
formed bad years that everyone saw.
He turned 22 and married a girl of his dreams,
walking down the aisle, hand in hand they were seen.
After they said their I do’s he looked to his father and placed that black hat on her head...
He looked to her, then to him again, and this is what he said...

The years went by and life was getting hard,
he was calling it one more year in the PBR.
His father passed away in the middle of that year,
he couldn't ride a bull without holding back his tears.
Like with help from someone up above he made it to the top,
pulled off an awesome ride and took the finals at his last stop.
He stood there looking to the crowd,
they were calling out his name
He had the money and the buckle that came with all the fame.
He put that hat across his chest and dropped down to his knee.
Looked to the sky above hoping his dad could see...
With tears running down his cheeks and a new meaning to his words,
this is what he said...

I’m gonna make it to the big time,
just like you did dad,
you'll see me there someday,
and I’ll be wearing this hat.
It's more then a gift, that you've given me
I’ll repay you someday, dad you wait and see.
When I hold it I can do no wrong,
when I wear it, my faith is strong
and a fact is that,
You just can’t beat this hat.

Wait for me Dad,
I'll be there with this hat.
