Don't
Cry for the Horses
By
Brenda Riley-Seymore
A
good friend of mine, someone I grew up with, lost one of her most
cherished horses. A wonderfully bad tempered Thoroughbred named
"CJ." He went down in his stall, and my friend Rosie
called her Vet. It didn't look good, so in a desperate effort to
save him, Rosie decided to take every cent she had and rush him to
an Emergency Vet Clinic for surgery. With the help of friends, and
my boyfriend Tim, we fought to get him on his feet. We pushed,
pulled and shoved and finally got him loaded into the horse trailer.
Tim drove us there as fast as he could, and somehow CJ managed
to stay on his feet. We arrived at the clinic where the emergency
team was waiting for us, and unloaded CJ. Even in one of
Life's most dramatic moments CJ came out of that horse trailer with
a mouthful of hay. Old CJ wasn't passing up what might be his last
meal. If he had felt better, he probably would have taken a bite out
of one of us for good measure. We led him inside the examining room.
Tests quickly showed that CJ was in serious trouble and had little
hope of surviving the surgery. Without the surgery he would surely
die. While Rosie was taking a few moments to decide what the best
thing to do for CJ was, CJ made the decision for her. He went down
for the last time and laid quietly. I will never forget the look of
acceptance in those soft brown eyes as the Vet ended his suffering.
On the way home, as Tim drove, hauling the empty horse trailer
behind us, I sat with part of CJ's tail in a plastic bag in my lap.
All of us cried . In the silence this poem came to me. This poem is
dedicated to Rosie, Tim, Dale, CJ, Waco, Spot, Smokey, Buff, and
Possum, as it is to all of you that has ever lost a beloved horse.

Cry for the Horses

Don't cry for the horses
That life has set free
A million white horses
Forever to be
Don't cry for the horses
Now in God's hands
As they dance and they prance
To a heavenly band
They were ours as a gift
But never to keep
As they close their eyes
Forever to sleep
Their spirits unbound
On silver wings they fly
A million white horses
Against the blue sky
Look up into heaven
You'll see them above
The horses we lost
The horses we loved
Manes and tails flowing
They Gallop through time
They were never yours
They were never mine
Don't cry for the horses
They will be back someday
When our time has come
They will show us the way
On silver wings they will lift us
To the warmth of the sun
When our life is over
And eternity has begun
We will jump the sun
And dance over the moon
A Ballet of horses and riders
on the winds
to a heavenly tune
Do you hear that soft nicker
Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses
Love the ones that are here
Don't cry for the horses
Lift up your sad eyes
Can't you see them
As they fly by?
A million white horses
Free from hunger and pain
Their spirits set free
Until we ride again
